1. What position is open for election?

This election will fill the position of Vice-President Unit 2 (CI).

2. When and where will the election take place?

Elections will take place online using the Helios Voting platform. Members will receive login credentials on Wednesday, August 5th and be able to cast their ballot via the online platform from 12:00pm (noon) on Wednesday, August 5th until 12:00pm (noon) on Friday, August 7th. Results will be announced on Friday, August 7th.

3. When is the nomination period?

The nomination period will run from 12:00pm (noon) on Tuesday, July 29th until 12:00pm (noon) on Tuesday, August 4th.

No nomination shall be considered for a member not in who has not filed in writing with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) their consent to be nominated, duly witnessed by another member.

4. Who can be nominated?

All nominees must be members in good standing of the CUPE 4600 Unit 2 (CI) as of July 31, 2020. A member in good standing either:

  • currently holds a bargaining unit position and has paid their dues to CUPE 4600; or

  • has held a Unit 2 CI position within the preceding 24 months.

5. What is the nomination process?

 

Any member in good standing can nominate any other member in good standing. Any nomination must be seconded by another member in good standing. Members cannot nominate themselves.

To nominate someone, you must:

1. Send an email with the subject line ‘CUPE 4600 Nomination’ to the CEO at bao@cupe4600.ca with the following information:

  • the name and email address of the person being nominated, and the position for which they are being nominated;

  • the name of the nominator and which Unit they are a member of;

  • the name and email address of the seconder, and what Unit they are a part of.

2. Have the person you are nominating send a separate email the the CEO at bao@cupe4600.ca acknowledging acceptance of their nomination.

The CEO will then verify the nominee is a member in good standing and contact the seconder to verify the nomination.

 

6. Will the Union share nominee statements with the membership?

Yes. Nominees can submit a written statement, no longer than 400 words, to be placed on the union website. These statements will be available on the union’s website on Tuesday, August 4th and for the duration of the election. Send Nominee Statements to info@cupe4600.ca. 

7. Can more than one person hold this position?

Yes, the position of VP Unit 2 can be shared by two people as a co-position.

If two individuals wish to be jointly nominated for this position, they must declare their desire to do so prior to the start of the election.

Any honorarium attached to the position will be split equally between the two elected individuals.

8. How long is the term of office?

The term of office for will run from the confirmation of the election results until April 30th, 2021.

9. What is the time commitment and workload for Executive positions?

CUPE 4600 is the largest union on campus, representing nearly 3000 workers. Taking on the role of a CUPE 4600 Executive member is a significant responsibility and involves not inconsiderable amounts of time, energy, and commitment. Beyond the enormous task of defending and advancing the concerns of the thousands of TAs and Contract Instructors at Carleton, Executive members are responsible for ensuring the smooth and democratic operations of the local, including managing staff, resources, and finances, and initiating and participating in a variety of campaigns on-campus and off. Any individuals interested in standing for election for any of the above positions are strongly encouraged to review CUPE 4600’s Bylaws, particularly Articles 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

10. Is there an honorarium?

Executive Board Members serving from June 1st, 2020 to April 30th, 2021, will be compensated the equivalent of the salary for a ¼ course as outlined in the CUPE 4600 Unit 2 collective agreement. This honorarium is paid monthly, minus taxes, increasing on September 1st, 2020 at the rate specified in the Unit 2 Collective Agreement, for each month they serve in their position.

Additionally, Unit 2 (CI) members receive a 0.5 seniority credit for each term they serve in an elected Board or Council position.
