CUPE 4600 expresses its outrage at the death of Abdirahman Abdi, an unarmed Black man who, according to eyewitnesses, was violently beaten by police and died as a result of his injuries on July 24th, 2016.
Abdi’s death is a painful reminder of the violence that communities of colour experience regularly at the hands of police in Canada. CUPE 4600 echoes community calls for a full and publicly accountable investigation into the violence that led to Abdi’s death. In addition, CUPE 4600 calls for all levels of government to address the institutionalized racism, ableism, and islamophobia within the Ottawa Police Service.
We encourage our members to attend the protest march to demand justice for Abdirahman which is scheduled for Saturday July 30th, at 1:30pm, at the corner of Wellington and Somerset.
