• Vice-President Internal
• Vice-President External
• Secretary-Treasurer

2. What other positions are open for election?

• Financial Trustee

You can find a detailed description of the duties of Financial Trustees in Article 10.12 of the CUPE 4600 Bylaws (pdf).

3. When and where will the elections take place?

Elections will take place during the General Membership Meeting on Wednesday, December 5th, in Room 2104 Canal Building, from 6:00pm-8:00pm.

4. When is the nomination period?

Nominations for all positions shall be received up to, and including, the Special Membership Meeting. No nomination shall be considered for a member not in attendance at the AGM or who has not filed in writing with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) their consent to be nominated, duly witnessed by another member.

5. Who can be nominated?

All positions are open to any member in good standing from either Unit.

All nominees must be members in good standing of the union as of December 5th, 2018. A member in good standing either:

• currently holds a bargaining unit position and has paid their dues to CUPE 4600; or
• has held a Unit 1 TA/RA position within the past 12 months and/or has priority; or
• has held a Unit 2 CI position within the preceding 24 months.

Any potential candidates nominated for election, either by themselves or by another member, must be present at the GMM or have submitted, in writing to the Chief Electoral Officer, their consent to be nominated, duly witnessed by another member.

6. Can more than one person hold a position?

The positions VP Internal and VP External can each be shared by two people as a co-position.

If two individuals wish to be jointly nominated for a position, they must declare their desire to do so prior to the start of the election.

Any honoraria attached to the position will be split equally between the two elected individuals.

7. How long are the terms of office?

The term of office for the Treasurer and VP External positions will run from the December GMM until April 30th, 2019. The term of office for the VP Internal position will run from January 1st, 2018 to April 30th, 2019. The term of office for the Financial Trustee position is 3 years, running from the election until April 30th, 2021.

8. What is the time commitment and workload for Executive positions?

Practically speaking, an Executive Board member of CUPE 4600 spends a couple hours per week, on average, carrying out union business and fulfilling the duties associated with their position.

CUPE 4600 is the largest union on campus, representing nearly 3000 workers. Taking on the role of a CUPE 4600 Executive member is a significant responsibility and involves not inconsiderable amounts of time, energy, and commitment. Beyond the enormous task of defending and advancing the concerns of the thousands of TAs and Contract Instructors at Carleton, Executive Board and Council members are responsible for ensuring the smooth and democratic operations of the local, including managing staff, resources, and finances, and initiating and participating in a variety of campaigns on-campus and off. Any individuals interested in standing for election for any of the above positions are strongly encouraged to review CUPE 4600’s Bylaws, particularly Articles 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

9. Is there an honorarium?

As Executive Board positions, the Secretary-Treasurer, VP Internal and VP External are compensated $897.12 per month minus taxes for each month they serve in their position.

Additionally, Unit 2 (CI) members serving in any of the positions listed above will receive a 0.5 seniority credit for each term they serve in an elected Board or Council position.

There is no compensation for individuals serving in the role of Financial Trustee.

The full descriptions of CUPE 4600 honoraria can be found in Appendix B of the union’s Bylaws.
